Is a smart thermostat worth it?

A smart thermostat doesn't make your boiler more efficient. It saves money by stopping you heating an empty house and making it easy to run the heating a little cooler. Whether it's worth it depends on how well you already control your heating.

Yearly saving on 11,500kWh of gas
5% less gas (gas)£45.83
10% less gas (gas)£91.66
15% less gas (gas)£137.48

Electricity 26.32p/kWh, gas 7.97p/kWh (Ofgem cap, 1 October to 31 December 2026). Typical figures.

Worked example

A typical UK home uses around 11,500kWh of gas a year. At 7.97p/kWh that's about £916.55 of gas (plus standing charges). If most of that goes on heating and a smart thermostat helps you cut usage by:

So a thermostat costing £150–£250 installed would typically pay for itself in two to four years, sooner in a larger home or if your current setup is an old dial with no timer.

Who benefits most

Who benefits least: if you already use a programmable timer well and are home most of the day, savings will be small.

Frequently asked questions

Do smart thermostats really save money?

They can, mainly by cutting heating when nobody is home. Savings depend on your home and habits, so an existing well-used timer reduces the benefit.

Can I fit a smart thermostat myself?

Many are designed for DIY fitting where they replace an existing wired thermostat, but some installations need an engineer, especially anything involving mains wiring or the boiler.

Do I need smart radiator valves too?

Not to start with, but they let you heat only the rooms you use, which is where bigger savings come from.
